Godly Wise Anger Management

Sharon Stay

What wisdom does God's righteous word advise all people about anger?
"A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control." Proverbs 29:11

"A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated." Proverbs 14:17

"Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared." Proverbs 22:24

"Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone." Proverbs 25:15

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1

"A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel." Proverbs 15:18

"If a ruler's anger rises up against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great errors to rest." Ecc 10:4

What is God's anger like?

"You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love." Neh 9:17 (see also Ex 34:6; Ps 103:8; Na 1:3; Ps 86:15; Jonah 4:2)

"For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favour lasts a lifetime." Ps 30:5

"Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath." Ps 78:38

"But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Luke 6:28.

Being angry does not give a person permission to behave in an illegal manner.
Righteous anger is okay.
Remain self-controlled.
We are to follow the good example God has given us and stay close to God.
Love God and obey his commandments. Be a blessing to others.
